Snowshoe hikes alone or with supervision?

The snowshoe ride, it's simply hiking in the snow. Snowshoes prevent you from sinking into the snow and thus avoid unnecessary fatigue. You can practice this activity without a guide. At Chalet d’en Hô, we know the routes perfectly, and we will be able to advise you on walks depending on the state of the snow, the weather. By following our advice, you will walk safely.

But to fully enjoy your vacation, we also offer all inclusive packages per week, with guide, lunch, and equipment included.

It is also possible to go out for a snowshoe hike with a “à la carte” accompanist.

What equipment should you need?

Snowshoes and poles (you can rent them in Névache)
High-top, waterproof hiking shoes (remember to maintain them with a suitable waterproofing product)
Winter hiking pants (with tights underneath, depending on the temperature)
Clothing appropriate to the weather conditions. The classic equipment for winter is the system of 3 superimposed layers: a breathable base layer to wick away perspiration (a technical merino wool t-shirt, for example), a layer to protect yourself from the cold (a sweatshirt or a fleece jacket) and a windbreaker to protect yourself from wind and bad weather (Gore-Tex type jackets are ideal).
Sun protection (glasses and sunscreen)
Protection against the cold (hat, gloves, neck warmer, etc.)
A backpack to carry water, food, and store accessories while you are not wearing them (jacket, hat, gloves, etc.)

Which route to choose?

There are all types of routes, from marked and groomed snowshoe trails to trails without any trace. We recommend taking easy routes to start, and continuing gradually. You are in the middle of the mountains, snowshoeing is a physical activity, so keep fun and safety in mind above all. We know the Clarée valley very well and we will tell you where to go to start.

From Chalet d’en Hô, you can go for short walks or longer ones snowshoe hikes. Below are some itinerary ideas:

go on snowshoes in one of the Haute Vallée refuges for lunch or a hot drink: Buffère, Chardonnet, Laval, Ricou.
follow the river Clarée on snowshoes up to fontcouverte for a good lunch at the Auberge de la Fruitière.
marcher in forest on snowshoes. Perhaps you will encounter an animal there?
discover the Col de l’Echelle on snowshoes. When the road is closed, it becomes a little “end of the world” again!
go snowshoeing in the Thures valley or the family hamlet of Acles, or in the big valley ...
